No. 7 Titan Softball Splits Nonconference Pair at DePauw

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- The No. 7-ranked Illinois Wesleyan softball team split a pair of nonconference games against DePauw University, winning the opener 13-5 in an abbreviated six innings before losing game two, 4-1, at Tigers Field in Greencastle, Ind., on Tuesday, April 2.

The Titans are now 13-4 overall this season and DePauw is 9-9.

In the first game, Illinois Wesleyan banged out 13 hits including two each from junior rightfielder Mia Massaro, junior second baseman Shelby Fulk, senior third baseman Julie Josten and junior first baseman Kara Bischoff. Josten and Massaro, who drove home three runs, each had two-base hits while freshman catcher Hayley Earl, Bischoff each had two runs batted in along with junior Brittany Murphy, who tagged a two-run home run in the third inning.
Junior Brea Walker (6-1) had the complete game, allowing five runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and four walks.

In game two, IWU was limited to five hits and one run coming on a solo homer with two outs in the first inning by junior shortstop Sam Berghoff, her seventh of the season and 28th in her career. The IWU season record is 13 (Berghoff, 2018) and the career mark is 32 (Emma Clark, 2011-13). Go here to see records through the 2018 season.
Freshman first baseman Colleen Palczynski had the team's other extra-base hit with a seventh inning leadoff double.
The Tigers were held to four hits in a complete game by junior Ally Wiegand (7-2), who struck out seven against no walks. All four of the runs allowed were unearned.

Illinois Wesleyan has a pair of College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin doubleheaders on tap for the weekend, hosting Wheaton College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, and facing Augustana College in a 12 p.m. game on Sunday, April 7.
