MOLINE, Ill. -- The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team lost the opener, 6-5, and fell in game two, 4-3, in 12 innings in a doubleheader against Augustana College at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field in Moline, Ill., on Tuesday, April 2.
IWU now has a 9-11 overall record and a mark of 2-4 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while the Vikings sport a 15-5-1 overall mark and are 5-1 in the CCIW.
In the first game, Illinois Wesleyan had a 5-1 lead heading into the last of the seventh before surrendering two in the seventh and three more in the eighth. Sophomore reliever
Hunter Simon (1-2) took the loss, allowing three runs in 1 1/3 innings on two hits with a walk and a wild pitch. The game had six walks and six hit batters.
The Titans banged out 10 hits, all singles, compared to eight for Augie with junior centerfielder
Nick Figus and junior third baseman
Dalton Fletcher getting two each. In addition to Figus and Fletcher, senior leftfielder
John Bosco, senior shortstop
Stephen Billington and junior second baseman
Jeran Simpson all provided runs batted in.
In game two, IWU rallied from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game with three in the seventh. Freshman leftfielder
Evan Ranneklev led off with a home run and back-to-back doubles by Fletcher and freshman centerfielder
Dom DiLello accounted for the other runs with DiLello, who had three of IWU's eight hits, getting the two RBI.
Junior
Braden Miller (0-1), the sixth Titan pitcher in game two, went the final 5 1/3 innings and allowed only one run on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
What's Next?
The Titans play a CCIW three-game series at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wis., with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 12 p.m. and a single game Sunday also with a 12 p.m. start.
