Wiegand Throws No-Hitter as Titans Sweep Lake Forest

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Illinois Wesleyan junior Ally Wiegand threw a no-hitter in the first game and earned the pitching win in relief in game two as the Titans swept Lake Forest, 2-0 and 5-4 in nine innings at IWU Field on Thursday, March 28.

The No. 7-ranked Titans are 12-3 overall and the Foresters slipped to 7-9.

In the first game, Wiegand struck out 16 in tossing IWU's first no-hitter since Mackenzie Marquis had a five-inning hitter vs. Monmouth on April 1, 2015. Go here to see list of Titan no-hitters since 2003.
She got all the offense she needed from a Brittany Murphy solo home run in the second inning and a Murphy run batted in single in the sixth inning to knock home junior shortstop Sam Berghoff, who had singled to lead off the inning.
IWU was limited to four hits in a complete game from Lake Forest's Missy Dieckman-Meyer (2-3).

Illinois Wesleyan was in a 4-0 hole heading into the last of the fourth before solo home runs from freshman first baseman Colleen Palczynski in the fourth and Berghoff in the fifth got the Titans back to within two at 4-2. IWU went on to tie the game in the sixth on two singles, two walks and a hit batter.

Leading off the bottom of the ninth with the game tied at 4-4, Berghoff's second home run of the game, a tremendous shot well over the rightfield fence, ended the game in walk-off fashion. Through 15 games of the year, Berghoff now has six home runs this season and 27 in her career. The IWU season record is 13 from Berghoff last year and the career mark is 32 by Emma Clark (2011-13). In striking out three in three scoreless, hitless innings, Wiegand (7-1) got the pitching win in relief of junior starter Brea Walker, who went six innings and struck out five while allowing two earned runs on 10 hits.

What's Next?
Illinois Wesleyan has a rare spring weekend off before playing next on Tuesday, April 2, in a doubleheader at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., at 4 p.m. ET.
