BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Illinois Wesleyan softball team opened its home season with a pair of nonconference wins over Monmouth College on Monday, March 25. The Titans won game one, 8-0, and took a 4-1 decision in the nightcap.
With the wins, Illinois Wesleyan improved to 10-3 and the Scots are now 3-13.
In the opener, junior
Brea Walker (5-1) allowed three hits with four walks and had four strikeouts. IWU had a 10-hit attack with two hits each coming from junior second baseman
Shelby Fulk and junior shortstop
Sam Berghoff, who had a solo homer in the fourth and drove home another run in the fifth.
Junior rightfielder
Brittany Murphy and freshman first baseman
Colleen Palczynski each had two runs batted in to lead IWU in the game shortened by the run-rule.
After Monmouth's Kaelen Bradley led off the second game with a home run, IWU junior
Ally Wiegand (5-1) allowed no more runs and only three more hits, all singles. Wiegand struck out 10 and walked none in the four-hit complete game.
Murphy had three singles and an RBI in an eight-hit Titan offense in the win and Fulk had two runs batted in with two hits, including a double for IWU's only extra-base knock.
What's Next?
Illinois Wesleyan is at home again Thursday, March 28, hosting Lake Forest College in a 4 p.m. doubleheader. The Foresters are 7-7.
