Illinois Wesleyan Softball Opens Season With Two Wins in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The No. 2-ranked Illinois Wesleyan softball team won its first two games of the 2019 season, topping Catholic University 3-1 and downing Stockton in nine innings, 3-2, on Tuesday, March 12, at The Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.

Junior Ally Wiegand struck out 13 and scattered four hits against Catholic (2-4). Junior leftfielder Brittany Murphy had two of the Titans' eight hits and drove home a run while junior rightfielder Courtney Barrett knocked home Hayley Earl and Julie Josten with a sixth inning single.

Against Stockton (4-2), junior Brea Walker allowed six hits and struck out 10 in the nine-inning complete game. The Titans rallied with a run in the bottom of the eighth on a single by Murphy to tie the game at 2-2 and scored the winning run with two outs in the ninth when senior Jillian Runyon had a single to drive home Earl, who opened the inning on second base due to the international tie-break rule.
