BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - A monster game from junior Riley Brovelli (Oglesby, Ill.-LaSalle-Peru) pushed the No. 22 Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team past the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 73-61, Monday night, Dec. 9, inside the Shirk Center.
Brovelli dropped a career-high 21 points and added a career-best 15 rebounds to fuel the Titans to their third straight win as IWU moved to 8-2 on the season. The junior forward's 15 boards are the 18th-most in IWU single game history as well as the most by a Titan since Lexi Baltes grabbed 16 against Howard Payne, Dec. 28, 2013. Brovelli, who finished the game 10-of-14 from the floor, tallied 12 of her 15 rebounds in the second half and helped IWU to a 42-32 edge in points in the paint.
Fellow junior Kendall Sosa (Bloomington, Ill.-University) added 13 points and a career-high six assists, while sophomore Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West) chipped in 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
A tight first quarter saw Illinois Wesleyan get out in front 19-17, before using an 11-2 run over the final 4:52 of the half gave IWU a 41-27 advantage into the break.
UW-Stevens Point kept within striking distance in the second half, but Brovelli and the Titans held the Pointers off to notch their third straight victory, 73-61.
Illinois Wesleyan dominated the paint, outscoring UWSP 42-32, and owned an 18-2 lead in fastbreak points. The Titans also outrebounded the Pointers 45-37. Offensively, IWU shot 44.6 percent from the floor. UW-Stevens Point finished 23-of-68 (33.8 percent) from the field, while both teams struggled from distance. The Titans converted just 23.5 percent of their triples and the Pointers connected on 23.8 percent of their tries from beyond the arc.
The Titans will take on final exams this week before returning to the hardwood at Augustana College Sunday, Dec. 15. Tipoff between the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin battle in Rock Island, Ill. is scheduled for 1 p.m.
