Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Titans' Comeback Comes Up Short at Augustana

Kendall Sosa dropped a game-high 29 points to lead IWU

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – A slow start was too much to overcome as the No. 21/22 Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team saw its win streak snapped at three with a 86-80 setback at Augustana College Sunday, Dec. 15. IWU heads into the holiday break with an 8-3 overall record and a 2-1 mark in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play, while Augustana moved to 6-5 (2-0 CCIW).

Juniors Kendall Sosa (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) and Riley Brovelli (Oglesby, Ill.-LaSalle-Peru) paced IWU. Sosa poured in a game-high 29 points on 10-of-24 shooting and added eight rebounds, six assists, and five steals. Brovelli picked up her third straight double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. She also tallied four assists, three blocks, and a steal.

Sophomore Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West) and senior Sydney Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Turnovers and fouls made it difficult for the Titans to sustain any momentum and played in favor of the Vikings. Augustana made the most of Illinois Wesleyan's early struggles, scoring six points in transition and going 12-for-15 at the charity stripe to take a 40-36 lead into halftime.

IWU used a 10-3 run over a four-minute stretch in the third quarter to take its first lead of the game on a Sosa three-point play. Splitting a pair of defenders, Sosa sunk the bucket and converted the free throw to put the Titans up 52-50 with 3:50 to go in the frame.

Illinois Wesleyan's advantage was short-lived though, as junior Samantha Munroe's (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) game-tying layup was followed by an Augie run. The Vikings closed the third quarter on a 7-2 run to regain control 64-59 with 10 minutes to go.

In the fourth quarter, the Titans could not overcome poor shooting from the field and were spurned by a 7-for-16 effort at the free throw line, eventually falling short 86-80.

IWU finished 30-of-75 from the floor for the game and converted 28 percent of its three-point attempts and 50 percent of its free throw tries. Augustana converted 50 percent of its 62 shot attempts, 43.8 percent of its three-balls (7-of-16), and went 17-for-24 at the charity stripe.

Augie also held a 47-39 advantage on the glass, while the Titans edged the Vikings in assists (20 to 16), steals (12 to 8), and blocks (4 to 3). IWU committed 12 turnovers and forced 19 Augustana miscues.

Illinois Wesleyan is off for more nearly two weeks before squaring off against No. 6 Mary Hardin Baylor in Belton, Texas Saturday, Dec. 28. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
