BELTON, Texas - Junior
Riley Brovelli (Oglesby, Ill.-LaSalle-Peru) grabbed 20 rebounds to break a 30-year old program record and senior
Sydney Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) added a double-double but it was not enough for the Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team at fifth-ranked University of Mary-Hardin Baylor Saturday night, Dec. 28. The Titans could not overcome their shooting woes in a 67-55 loss to the Crusaders.
Brovelli tallied 10 offensive rebounds and 10 on the defensive end to set the program record. She surpassed Debbie Brady and Mary Valtichka's previous record of 19 which had stood since Jan. 28, 1979. The junior forward also added seven points, four blocks, two steals, and two assists.
Shanks was the lone Titan to reach double figures, dropping a season-high 21 points and adding 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the year.
Illinois Wesleyan took the lead with just over eight minutes to play on a jumper by Shanks, but the Crusaders scored 11 unanswered points over the next four minutes to take a 58-47 advantage. From that point on, IWU pulled within six but could not come any closer, eventually falling 67-55.
The Titans struggled to find an offensive rhythm as Illinois Wesleyan went 22-of-74 from the field, converting just 29.7 percent of its shots. IWU's shooting woes stretched to the free throw and three-point lines, where the Titans knocked down 7-of-22 free throws and 4-of-21 three-point attempts. Meanwhile, UMHB held a 44.3 field goal percentage and went 10-for-14 from the charity stripe.
Illinois Wesleyan returns to action Saturday, Jan. 4, at 2 p.m. inside the Shirk Center when the Titans square off against Millikin University in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play.
