Women's Hoops Wins St. Norbert Tipoff Tournament with Win Over Calvin

Titans out to best start since 2009-10 season

DEPERE, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team improved to 4-0 on the season as it won the St. Norbert Tipoff Tournament with a 60-44 win over Calvin University Saturday afternoon, Nov. 16. Junior Kendall Sosa (Bloomington, Ill.-University HS) was named the tournament's most valuable player, while senior Sydney Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic HS) and junior Riley Brovelli (Oglesby, Ill.-LaSalle Peru HS) were also named to the all-tournament team.

Illinois Wesleyan's 4-0 start is its best stretch to begin the season in a decade. Meanwhile, Calvin saw its record dip to 2-2 on the season.

Sosa continued her torrid start to the season with a 14-point, 13-rebound double-double. Shanks added a team-high 16 points and Brovelli finished just short of her fourth straight double-double with 10 rebounds and nine points. Sophomore Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West HS) contributed a season-high 11 points with three triples made.

IWU's defense stymied the Calvin, as the Titans held the Knights to 31 percent from the floor and 13 percent from beyond the arc. Illinois Wesleyan shot 35.7 percent for the game and went 8-of-23 from distance. The Titans recorded 14 steals while turning the Knights over 19 times. Sosa, Shanks, and junior Sam Munroe (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) registered four swipes apiece.

Illinois Wesleyan makes a return trip to the Badger state next weekend, Nov. 23, to face off against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
