BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's basketball team led from wire-to-wire for a 95-76 win over Alma College Saturday afternoon, Nov. 16, at the Shirk Center. With the win, the Titans improved to 2-1 on the season.
Sophomore
Keondre Schumacher (Bloomington, Ill.-University HS) scored a game-high 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting, while juniors
Grant Wolfe (Dieterich, Ill.-Effingham HS) and
Doug Wallen (Champaign, Ill.-Champaign Central), and sophomore
Peter Lambesis (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-St. Viator) also finished with double-digit points. Wolfe finished with 19 points, while Lambesis added 16 and Wallen 13. Sophomore
Cory Noe (Mahomet, Ill.-Mahomet-Seymour) chipped in seven points off the bench.
Overall, Illinois Wesleyan held a 50 to 47.5 advantage in field goal percentage. IWU's edge extended beyond the three-point line, where the Titans converted 10-of-23 triples to the Scots' 8-of-25 showing. Illinois Wesleyan also won the rebounding battle, 39-34, handed out 17 assists to AC's 15, and tallied 11 steals on 19 Alma turnovers. Junior
Charlie Bair (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South HS) was pivotal defensively, grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds and adding a game-best four thefts.
The Titans saw their 22-point lead trimmed to seven with nine minutes to go as the Scots' Brandon Rake converted a layup in transition, but IWU forged ahead with a 5-0 run over the next two minutes to extend its lead to double digits.Â
Alma would pull within eight twice down the stretch, but Illinois Wesleyan held off any comeback attempt to take the 95-76 victory.
The Titans hit the road for a three-game stint beginning with a Tuesday night game at the University of Chicago, Nov. 19. Tipoff from the Windy City is scheduled for 7 p.m.
