Balanced Offense Leads Women's Hoops Past UW-Stout 84-75

Titans move to 3-0 on the season for the first time since 2014-15

DEPERE, Wis. – Balanced scoring led the Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team to its third straight win Friday night, Nov. 15, at the St. Norbert Tipoff Classic. Four Titans scored in double figures to lead IWU to an 84-75 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Stout. The win moved Illinois Wesleyan to 3-0 on the season, its best start since the 2014-15 campaign.

Junior Kendall Sosa (Bloomington, Ill.-University) and senior Sydney Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) led the Titans in scoring, while junior Riley Brovelli (Oglesby, Ill.-LaSalle-Peru) notched her third straight double-double. Sosa net a team-high 25 points, while going a perfect 12-for-12 at the free throw line for her third straight 20+ point effort. Shanks added a season-high 20 points, five rebounds, five assists, and three steals and Brovelli net a season-high 18 points and pulled down 11 boards. Also finishing in double figures was junior Sam Munroe (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) who flirted with a triple-double. Munroe scored a season-best 16 points, dished out a game-high seven assists, and added five rebounds.

Illinois Wesleyan dug itself out of a five-point first quarter deficit with a big second period. Trailing 17-12 after 10 minutes of play, IWU broke the game open with a 21-6 run over the first six minutes of the second quarter to take a commanding lead. The Titans moved ahead by 21 points with 11 unanswered points over the next four minutes to go into the half up, 44-23.

UW-Stout cut into IWU's advantage in the third, as the Blue Devils capitalized on Titan turnovers. The Blue Devils scored 12 points off nine Illinois Wesleyan miscues to trim the Titans' lead to 11, 58-47, into the final period.

IWU scored 18 of its 26 fourth-quarter points at the free throw line to escape with an 84-75 victory.

With the win, Illinois Wesleyan advances to the tournament's championship game tomorrow, Nov. 16, at 3 p.m. The Titans will take on the winner of tonight's Calvin-St. Norbert contest.
