Women's Soccer Cruises to 4-1 Win at Millikin

The Titans wrap up regular season at home Saturday, Nov. 2, against Elmhurst for Senior Day

DECATUR, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team rolled past Millikin University 4-1 at Frank M. Lindsay Field Wednesday night, Oct. 30. The win gave the Titans their sixth straight victory and moved them to 11-5 overall and 6-1 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play.

Illinois Wesleyan got on the board in the 16th minute as junior Cameron Hindel (Batavia, Ill.-Batavia HS) tucked a header inside the far post on a crafty cross from senior Flower Edington (Wilmette, Ill.-New Trier Township HS) to put IWU in front, 1-0.

Senior Braelyn Spears (San Antonio, Texas-Univ. of Incarnate Word HS) doubled the Titans' lead with her second goal of the year in 38th minute. Junior Peyton Howe (Austin, Texas-James Bowie HS) fired an initial shot which was deflected and tapped in by Spears for the eventual game-winner.

A corner service from Hindel led to IWU's third goal of the day. Hindel put the cross right inside the six and senior Ellie Crabtree (Springfield, Ill.-Edwardsville HS) slipped a shot past the keeper to push Illinois Wesleyan's advantage to 3-nil in the 64th minute.

Millikin broke up the shutout with a goal of their own in the 74th minute, but it did little to thwart the Titans' momentum as IWU responded less than 10 minutes later. Sophomore Caelyn Steffens' (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community HS) rebound found the foot of sophomore Madison Fischer (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg HS). The goal marked the first of Fisher's career as she became the 12th Titan to find the back of the net this season and sealed the 4-1 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan fired off 22 shots, putting 16 on frame, while Millikin tallied just five shots, two of which were on target. The Titans manufactured four corners to three by the Big Blue, while MU held an 8-4 lead in fouls. Sophomore Maria Fields (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East HS) picked up her eighth win in goal for IWU, making one save.

Illinois Wesleyan closes out the regular season as part of a triple-header with the IWU football and IWU men's soccer teams Saturday, Nov. 2, when the Titans tangle with Elmhurst College. Kickoff of the Senior Day showdown is scheduled for 7 p.m.
