Women's Soccer Shuts Out Elmhurst for Senior Night Win

IWU extended its win streak to seven games

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. –
The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team picked up its seventh win in-a-row with a 3-0 shutout of Elmhurst College Saturday night, Nov. 2, at Neis Field on Senior Night. In goal, sophomore Maria Fields (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East HS) made one save to notch her third clean sheet of the season.

IWU's win gives the Titans a 12-5 overall record, including a 7-1 CCIW mark. Elmhurst finishes the year with an 8-8-2 record (2-5-1 CCIW).The victory also marked the Titans' ninth straight win over the Bluejays and extended their unbeaten streak against Elmhurst to 17 straight contests.

Junior Cameron Hindel (Batavia, Ill.-Batavia HS), sophomore Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community), and junior Megan O'Neal (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East HS) tallied goals for the Titans in the win, with Hindel's serving as the game-winner.

Senior Flower Edington's (Wilmette, Ill.-New Trier HS) cross attempted to be cleared but Steffens played it back to Hindel at the top of the 18. Taking a touch, Hindel ripped a shot inside the left post to put IWU in front 1-nil just 30 seconds into the second half with what proved to be the game-winner.

Steffens drew a free kick 20 yards out just moments later and took full advantage of the free kick opportunity to double Illinois Wesleyan's lead with her team-leading 10th strike of the season.

O'Neal added an insurance goal in the 81st on an assist from Gatehouse to extend IWU's advantage to 3-nil, capping the Senior Night victory.

As part of Senior Night, the Titans honored Kaitlyn Chen (Saratoga, Calif.-Saratoga HS)Ellie Crabtree (Springfield, Ill.-Edwardsville HS)Flower Edington (Wilmette, Ill.-New Trier Township HS)Shannon Gatehouse (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East HS), and Braelyn Spears (San Antonio, Texas-Univ. Incarnate Word HS) prior to the match.

Illinois Wesleyan begins its CCIW Tournament journey at home Wednesday, Nov. 6, against third-seeded North Central. The semifinal match is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Neis Field.
