Titans Top Millikin in High Scoring Affair

Hickey and Ballard extended their point streaks to four straight games

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team topped Millikin University in a high-scoring affair of Neis Field Tuesday night, Oct. 29, in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action. The Titans notched their fourth straight victory, while seniors Patrick Hickey (Des Plaines, Ill.-St. Viator) and Doug Ballard (Solana Beach, Calif.-Canyon Crest Academy) extended their point streaks to four games.

Hickey racked up five points in the win, the seventh-most in single game history, with a pair of goals and an assist. The Des Plaines, Ill. native now has 21 points on the season, tying for the fifth-most in IWU single season history, as well as the most by a Titan since Ballard totaled 21 points in 2017.

Hickey opened up the scoring with a header off a free kick from junior Bobby Reichert (Yorkville, Ill.-Yorkville HS) in the 9th minute.

Millikin responded with the equalizer off a free kick moments later in the 14th minute as the Big Blue bent a restart in from just outside the 18 to level the game at one all.

Illinois Wesleyan found the back of the net again in the 22nd minute on a counter to regain the lead, as Hickey played a ball over the top to sophomore Donovan Malone (Houston, Texas-St. Pius X HS). Using his speed to break past the Big Blue defense, Malone delivered a cross on the six which Ballard buried.

Just a few minutes later in the 28th minute, senior Spencer Bard (Appleton, Wis.-Appleton West HS) put in his first goal of the season that also turned out to be the game-winner, off a corner cross by sophomore Zack Kokes (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central HS).

Millikin made it interesting with a goal in the 59th minute, but Hickey converted a penalty kick to secure the 4-2 victory.

IWU wraps up the regular season with a Senior Day match against Elmhurst College Saturday, Nov. 2, at 4:30 p.m. The match is the second part of a triple-header with the IWU football team, which kicks off at 1 p.m. at Tucci Stadium, and the IWU women's soccer team, which takes on Elmhurst at 7 p.m.
