Titans Claim Victory Over Augustana as Winning Streak Extends to Four

Caelyn Steffens and Lauren Shanks continue scoring streaks

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team earned its fourth straight victory with a 3-1 win over Augustana College Wednesday evening, Oct. 23 at Neis Field. The Titans now have a 9-5-0 overall record with a 4-1 record in CCIW play and have won eight of their last ninen matches.

After the Vikings scored the first goal of the game in the seventh minute, the Titans responded with a goal by sophomore Erin Peck (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton St. Francis HS) with sophomore Rachel White (Naperville, Ill.-Waubonsie Valley HS) assisting in the 10th minute. 

Freshman Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) gave IWU the lead in the 28th minute with assists by sophomores Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) and Heather Dietrich (Geneseo, Ill.-Geneseo HS). Shanks has recorded either a goal or an assist in all four games of IWU's current winning streak.

Steffens then scored a goal in her third straight game in the 82nd minute directly on a free kick, giving IWU the winning 3-1 margin. Steffens' three-point game put her at a CCIW-leading 22 points on the season, along with her nine goals that also lead the conference. 

Peck led all players with six shots, two on goal. Junior
Kelli McCarthy (San Diego, Calif.-Cathedral Catholic HS) saved four shots for the Titans as goalkeeper en route to her third win of the season. The Titans led the Vikings in shots (21 to 6) and corner kicks (6 to 5).

IWU will travel to Waukesha, Wis. for a match against CCIW foe Carroll University, Saturday, Oct. 26. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and is the first leg of a doubleheader with the men's team.
