Pair of Second-Half Goals Push Women’s Soccer to Victory Over Carthage

Kelli McCarthy saved three to preserve second straight shoutout for IWU

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team scored two second-half goals to hand Carthage College its first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin loss of the season with 2-0 victory, Saturday, Oct. 19, at Neis Field. The second straight shutout for the Titans improved their overall record to 8-5-0 and a 3-1-0 record in CCIW play.

After a scoreless first half, IWU got on the board in the 70th minute from a goal by freshman Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) off a pass from sophomore Erin Peck (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton St. Francis HS). Sophomore Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) converted on a penalty kick in the 79th minute to give the Titans the final 2-nil margin.

Peck led all Titans with three shots along with two on goal to go with her assist. Junior Kelli McCarthy (San Diego, Calif.-Cathedral Catholic HS) saved three shots to preserve the shutout for IWU. The Titans held the advantage in shots (13 to 7), shots on goal (8 to 3) and corners (5 to 1).

Illinois Wesleyan will play its next match back at Neis Field against Augustana College, Wednesday, Oct. 23. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Neis Field.
