BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team spoiled the conference season opener of Carthage College on Sunday, April 8, defeating the Red Men by a final score of 30-10. 30 goals from IWU broke the previous program record of 29 goals set twice previously and most recently against Alma College on Feb. 17, 2018.
With a win the Titans improved to 8-3 on the season with an unblemished 3-0 mark in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW). Carthage fell to 8-4 overall and 0-1 in the CCIW following their conference opening loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Titans opened the game on a 4-0 run over the first five minutes of game action. Junior Bailey Marth started hot scoring two of IWU's first four goals.
- Carthage responded with two goals of their own, but the Titans poured in four more before the first quarter ended.
- Seven different Titans scored in a second quarter that featured five man-up goals.
- Sophomore Peter Trunk scored three of his game-high seven goals in the third quarter to pace the Titans. IWU scored six goals overall in the third.
- Carthage's Ben Morgan added two goals of his own in the fourth quarter scoring the pair in less than a minute.
- Sophomore Evan Anderson scored his second goal of the season in the final minute of action to give the Titans their record setting goal.
SIGNIFICANT STATISTICS
- Illinois Wesleyan out-shot the Red Men 57-36 overall and 42-24 in shots on goal. The Titans converted on .714 percent of their shots taken on goal.
- 14 saves from freshman goalkeeper McGuire Mynatt matches his season and career high.
- Due in part to the performance of junior J.C. Grabarek, the Titans won 33-of-41 total face-off attempts.
- Grabarek's 19 ground balls matched his season best.
- IWU converted on 6-of-7 extra man opportunities compared to just 3-of-11 for Carthage.
