BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Illinois Wesleyan men's lacrosse team defeated Whittier College on Friday, April 13 by a final score of 24-9. Sophomore
Alex Doorenbos led the Titans in scoring as he tied the all-time program record for goals in a game with eight. Previously, the record was held by 2017 seniors Michael Julius and Tim Smith.
With a win IWU improved to 9-3 on the season and Whittier fell to 4-6 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Illinois Wesleyan found themselves in an early hole as Whittier scored four of the first five goals of the contest.
- IWU responded with a 6-0 run to take a 7-4 lead late in the first quarter. Junior Bailey Marth scored twice for the Titans during this stretch.
- Whittier struck last in the first, but the Titans scored another five unanswered goals to open the second quarter.
- IWU played a man down for three minutes in the second quarter and didn't surrender a goal.
- Doorenbos scored four of his goals in each half.
- Sophomore Peter Trunk assisted on three goals in each half.
- Following a man-up goal by freshman Tanner Nelson in the third, Whittier added two more goals cutting IWU's lead to 13-8.
- The Titans ended the game on a 9-0 scoring run.
SIGNIFICANT STATISTICS
- Illinois Wesleyan out-shot the Poets 58-27 overall and allowed just single digit shots in each quarter after allowing 11 in the first.
- The Titans were successful on 12-of-16 clearance attempts and held Whittier to an 8-of-15 performance.
- IWU converted on 5-of-9 extra man opportunities compared to an 0-3 mark for Whittier.
- Junior J.C. Grabarek finished 27-of-32 on face-off attempts to lead the Titans who finished the day 29-for-36. Grabarek picked up a team-high 23 ground balls.

In a quick turnaround, Illinois Wesleyan will travel to Elmhurst College on Sunday, April 15 for a 1 p.m. game. The Bluejays are currently 10-1 overall this season and hold a 2-0 mark in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW). Elmhurst is currently riding a nine-game winning streak.
