Softball Splits With Beavers Ahead of Tournament Weekend

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The No. 10-ranked Illinois Wesleyan softball team split with Buena Vista University on Friday, April 6, winning game one by a final score of 6-1 and dropping game two to the Beavers 4-3. Senior Maggie Graham provided the Titans with offense in both contests, finishing both games 2-for-3 at the plate. Graham hit a late game solo home run to bring the Titans within one run in game two.

With a split the Titans moved to 14-4 on the season while Buena Vista now sits at 12-6 for the 2018 season.
 
In game one, senior Mackenzie Marquis (4-1) earned the victory pitching four innings of four hit softball while striking out two batters. Marquis was relieved by sophomore Ally Wiegand who allowed two hits and one earned run, while striking out four, in three innings of work.
 
Graham and Amanda Lack led the Titans with two hits apiece, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate.
 
Sophomore Kara Bischoff opened the game with a two-RBI double to give Illinois Wesleyan an early advantage. After an RBI single from Graham in the third, senior Stephanie Prentice plated three baserunners on a double to right centerfield in the fifth inning.

In game two, sophomore Brea Walker (4-2) was handed the lose after allowing eight hits and three earned runs over five innings pitched. Additionally, Walker struck out four batters and walked none. Wiegand returned to relieve Walker, allowing two hits and one earned run over two innings pitched.

Sophomore Sam Berghoff provided most of the offense for IWU in game two, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the first and a solo home run in the sixth inning.

Junior Jillian Runyon swiped three bases over the course of the doubleheader giving her 22 for the season.

For Buena Vista, Marissa Promes was the winning pitcher tossing a complete game and allowing just four hits. Michaela Mason provided the Beavers with offense, going 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs.
