ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The No. 23-ranked Illinois Wesleyan softball team spilt with the Augustana College Vikings on Sunday, April 29 to conclude the Titans regular season conference schedule. A day after wrapping up the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) regular season crown, Illinois Wesleyan defeated the Vikings 8-0 in game one before falling 2-1 in game two.
Illinois Wesleyan moved to 25-9-1 overall and finished out their CCIW schedule with a record of 14-2. This is the 14th time in program history that the Titans have finished with two or fewer losses in conference play. Augustana's season came to an end of Sunday with a 22-16 record in addition to a 7-9 performance in the CCIW.
In game one, sophomore
Brea Walker (8-3) turned in her fourth complete-game shutout of the season and her second in as many games. Walker allowed two hits and one walk while matching her season-high in strike outs with seven.
The Titans were led in RBI by sophomore
Sam Berghoff who plated three baserunners despite finishing the game 1-for-4 at the plate. Berghoff's two-RBI double in the fourth inning gave her 16 doubles on the season, which is tied for second-most in program single-season history. Keri Leach currently holds the program record for single-season doubles with 17, which she obtained in 2013. Berghoff's .917 slugging percentage is currently a single-season program record.
Sophomore
Shelby Fulk matched her season-high in hits with three and singled home a run in the fourth inning. Juniors
Jillian Runyon and
Julie Josten each got triples for Illinois Wesleyan.
A first inning home run by Augustana's Carly Wilson provided the Vikings with the only offense necessary in game two. Following a tough first inning sophomore
Ally Wiegand (11-3) responded by allowing just three hits for the remainder of the contest. Wiegand finished with no walks and 10 strikeouts to improve upon her NCAA Division III leading strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Berghoff drove in Runyon on a groundout to the pitcher for the Titans lone run of the game. Senior
Maggie Graham was 2-for-3 at the plate, but was caught stealing in the second inning.
