Berghoff Drives in Seven as Softball Sweeps DePauw

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- The No. 23-ranked Illinois Wesleyan softball team swept DePauw University on Tuesday, May 1 by final scores of 7-3 and 10-1. Sophomore Sam Berghoff led all Titans with seven runs batted in over the course of both games due in part to a pair of home runs. Berghoff finished the day 4-for-7 with two runs scored, one walk, and one double.

With a pair of wins on Tuesday the Titans concluded their regular season with a record of 27-9-1. DePauw fell to 20-20 heading into their respective conference tournament.

Following her performance on Tuesday, Berghoff now owns the Illinois Wesleyan single-season records for batting average (.500), slugging percentage (.957), and total bases (111). Berghoff is tied for the single-season lead in doubles (17) and is second in home runs (10) and RBI (53).

In game one, senior Mackenzie Marquis was handed a no decision after allowing five hits and three runs (two earned) over 4.1 innings pitched. Sophomore Ally Wiegand (12-3) earned the win pitching 2.2 innings of relief and allowing two hits. Game one marked Wiegand's only outing of the regular season without a strikeout recorded.
 
A pair of early Tiger errors led to two quick runs for IWU, scoring both junior Jillian Runyon sophomore Sydney Alery on throwing errors.
 
Back-to-back doubles from DePauw cut the Titan lead in half in the bottom of the first, but sophomore Brittany Murphy singled home sophomore Kara Bischoff in the second to increase IWU's lead to 3-1.
 
After a pair of Tiger runs knotted the game at 3-3, Runyon scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh on a throwing error from the DePauw catcher. The Tigers made four errors in game one and three led to Titan runs.
 
A two-RBI double from Berghoff and an RBI single from sophomore Courtney Barrett provided IWU with their final run tally of seven.
 
In game two, sophomore Brea Walker (9-3) earned the win after she pitched five shutout innings. Walker allowed four hits and one walk while striking out two. Freshman Meghan Bowler relieved Walker allowing three hits and one earned run in one inning pitched.
 
IWU scored early and often in game two, scoring in the first, third, fourth, and sixth innings. Senior Maggie Graham recorded RBI singles in the first and third innings. Sophomore Shelby Fulk and Alery each hit RBI doubles with Alery's bringing home two in the fourth.
 
Berghoff homered in consecutive at-bats, hitting a two-run home run in the fourth and a three-run home run in the sixth.
 
Senior Stephanie Prentice scored twice and was 2-for-3 at the plate in game two.
 
What's Next?
Illinois Wesleyan is set to host the CCIW conference tournament beginning on Friday, May 4. The two-day event will feature a minimum of six games between No. 1-seed Illinois Wesleyan, No. 2-seed North Central, No. 3-seed Carroll, and No. 4-seed Carthage.
