Men's Lacrosse Breaks Single-Game Goals Record on Seniors' Day

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Illinois Wesleyan men's lacrosse team broke the single-game program record for goals scored in a game on Saturday, April 28 with a 35-6 victory over Carroll University on seniors' day from Tucci Stadium. IWU's previous mark of 30 goals was set earlier this season against Carthage College on April 8.

Freshman attacker Brett Grabarek led the Titans in points (8), goals (5) and assists (3).

With a win the Titans conclude their regular season with an overall record of 14-3 alongside a perfect 6-0 record in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW). Carroll fell to 2-12 on the season an 0-6 in CCIW action.

Freshman goalkeeper McGuire Mynatt earned victory making four saves and allowing four goals in the first half. Mynatt was relieved by sophomore Benigno Houser and freshman Will Harris who each made two saves in the third and fourth quarters respectively. Carroll's Abe Escarda allowed 31 Titan goals and made 11 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Illinois Wesleyans scored a massive 15 goals in the first quarter which included four from sophomore Alex Doorenbos, three from sophomore Peter Trunk, and three from senior James Maibuecher.
  • The Titans scored seven times in the second to extend their lead to 22-4 at halftime. IWU received two goals from sophomore Evan Anderson in the second and sophomore Pete Picciolo scored his first goal of the season.
  • Freshman Ben Filo, freshman Nick Ceko, sophomore Erick Johnston, and Grabarek each scored their first goals of the season in the third quarter.
  • Freshman Emmett Hanold scored his first career goal after entering the game in the fourth quarter.

SIGNIFICANT STATISTICS:
  • Illinois Wesleyan out-shot Carroll 80-25 overall and 50-14 in shots on goal.
  • Carroll committed 27 turnovers to 15 for the Titans.
  • IWU was 16-of-17 on clearance attempts compared to 12-of-16 for Carroll.
  • The Titans won 30-of-44 face-off attempts and were led by freshman Andrew Runkle's 19-of-29 performance.
  • Illinois Wesleyan scored on 4-of-7 extra man opportunities.

What's Next?
Illinois Wesleyan will host the first round of the CCIW postseason tournament on Wednesday, May 2 at a time to be announced. Both Illinois Wesleyan lacrosse programs are set to host the first round on Wednesday.
