Men's Lacrosse Earns Second CCIW Regular Season Title in Win Over Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team defeated Augustana College by a 15-5 final on Wednesday, April 25 to clinch a share of their second College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) regular season championship.

Previously, the Titans earned a share of the regular season crown in 2016 alongside Carthage and Augustana. Illinois Wesleyan is now locked in as the No. 1 seed in the CCIW conference tournament and will host the first round on May 2.

With a win the Titans improved to 13-3 overall with a 5-0 mark in CCIW play. Augustana fell to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in the CCIW with a loss to IWU on Wednesday.

Freshman McGuire Mynatt was the winning goalkeeper for IWU making 14 saves on 19 shots on goal faced. Augustana's Jake Ellis was on the losing end after allowing 14 goals in addition to his 16 saves made.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Illinois Wesleyan opened the contest on a 9-0 scoring run that lasted into the second quarter of play. IWU's defense held Augustana to just one first half goal.
  • Sophomore Alex Doorenbos scored three times during IWU's 9-0 run and assisted on one goal. Sophomore Peter Trunk added two goals and one assist during the stretch as well.
  • John Danko broke Augustana's scoring drought with a goal late in the second quarter.
  • Doorenbos and Trunk connected for the final goal of the first half and gave the Titans a 10-1 lead going into halftime.
  • Trunk scored three times and assisted once in a four goal third quarter from IWU.
  • Augustana went on a late 4-0 run to cut Illinois Wesleyan lead to 14-5 with five minutes remaining in the contest.
  • Sophomore Wil Laidlaw capped off the Titans title clinching game with a goal at the 2:57 mark of the fourth quarter.

SIGNIFICANT STATISTICS
  • Illinois Wesleyan out-shot Augustana 54-31 overall and 31-19 in shots on goal.
  • The Titans picked up 59 ground balls compared to just 34 for the Vikings.
  • IWU won 21-of-24 face-off's and were led by junior J.C. Grabarek who was 12-for-13. Grabarek ranks No. 3 in Division III with a .733 face-off winning percentage.

Illinois Wesleyan will conclude their regular season schedule at home on Saturday, April 28 with a 1 p.m. game against Carroll University. Carroll enters Saturday's game with an overall record of 2-11.
