Women's Lacrosse Scores 18-3 Victory Over Carroll on Senior Day

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Illinois Wesleyan women's lacrosse team celebrated Senior Day on April 21, defeating Carroll University by a final score of 18-3 in celebration. Seniors Mariah Smith, Heather Grimmer, and Abby Kushina combined to score six goals for the Titans while Sydney Allen picked up three ground balls and Claire Quist earned the victory in goal.

With a win the Titans improved to 11-3 on the season with a 4-0 mark in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW). Carroll fell to 13-2 on the season and 3-2 in CCIW play following two consecutive losses to conference opponents.

Quist earned victory in goal for the Titans allowing three goals and making three saves in the first half of action. Freshman Janaye Godfrey played the second half in goal making five saves and allowing zero goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Illinois Wesleyan opened the contest on a 5-0 run that amassed 14:30 and held Carroll without a goal until the 7:52 mark.
  • Carroll's Clara Jelacic scored twice within a minute to bring the score to 5-2.
  • Using two goals from junior Dani Engelbreit and one from junior Grainne Kelly the Titans ended the first half on a 3-0 run to take a 9-3 lead into halftime.
  • Engelbreit and Kelly each scored goals in man-down situations after a Titan player was forced to sit out due to an illegal stick.
  • IWU wasted no time starting the running clock as the scored four goals in the first eight minutes of the second half.
  • For the second consecutive game Illinois Wesleyan held their opponents scoreless in the second half.
  • Seven different Titans combined to score 11 goals in the second.
  • Godfrey made four saves on free-position shots to prevent Carroll from getting back in the scoring column.

SIGNIFICANT STATISTICS
  • The Titans out-shot Carroll 42-12 overall and 30-11 in shots on goal.
  • Carroll finished 12-of-18 on clearance attempts while Illinois Wesleyan was a perfect 17-of-17.
  • IWU won 12 draw controls compared to nine for the Pioneers. Kelly led the Titans with five draw controls.
  • Illinois Wesleyan converted on 4-of-9 free-position shot attempts and held the Pioneers to a 1-of-8 performance.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Illinois Wesleyan will play their final home game of the regular season against North Central College on Wednesday, April 25 at 7 p.m. Teams may be playing for the opportunity to host the CCIW conference tournament as both sides are undefeated in conference competition. North Central has one game prior to their meeting with the Titans, against University of Dubuque at 4 p.m. on April 21.
