Women's Lacrosse Falls to Rhodes in Weekend Finale, 17-9

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Illinois Wesleyan women's lacrosse team dropped their second game of the weekend on Sunday, March 4, falling to Rhodes College by a final score of 17-9 from the turf of Tucci Stadium.

With a loss, the Titans fall to 2-2 overall on the season. Rhodes improved to 4-1 with a victory on Sunday.

Illinois Wesleyan nearly went shot-for-shot with the Lynx, trailing in shots on goal 22-19 for the match. It was turnovers that stung the Titans however as they committed 27 as opposed to 15 for Rhodes. IWU struggled a bit on their clearances in the first half going 4-of-8, and finishing the match 11-of-16. Illinois Wesleyan saw success on draw controls though, outdoing the Lynx 19-9. There were plenty of penalties to go around on Sunday, with the Lynx earning 15 free-position attempts to the Titans five.

Junior Dani Engelbreit was the Titans leading scorer with four goals and two assists. Engelbreit also came away with the draw control victory on 11 occasions. Junior Grainne Kelly tallied a brace with two goals and tied senior Mariah Smith for the team-high in caused turnovers with two. Smith led the team in ground balls with five.

Also scoring for the Titans were senior Abby Kushina, junior Sam Bidlack, and sophomore Amanda Best. Freshman Riley Rooney tied Engelbreit for the team-high in assists with two.

Freshman Janaye Godfrey started and finished the game in goal for Illinois Wesleyan, but briefly ceded time to senior Claire Quist. Godfrey allowed 14 goals and made three saves, while Quist allowed three goals alongside two saves.

Rhodes was led in scoring by Ashley Doyle and Maggie Rippeto who each tallied eight points. Doyle scored on seven occasions while assisting once, and Rippeto scored four times while assisting on four goals. Daly Colarossi picked up a team-high four ground balls.

Lauren Lazure was the winning goalkeeper for Rhodes and made 10 saves for the Lynx.

What's Next?
Illinois Wesleyan is back home on Wednesday, March 7, for a 7 p.m. match against DePauw University. DePauw currently holds a record of 0-3 and fell to CCIW opponent North Central by a final score of 12-10 on Saturday, March 3.
