MONMOUTH, Ill. -- The No. 14-ranked Illinois Wesleyan softball team's winning streak went to five games with a pair of nonconference wins at Monmouth College, 4-0 and 15-1, on Thursday, March 22.
The Titans improved to 7-3 overall and the Fighting Scots slipped to 9-7.
Sophomore
Ally Wiegand (3-1) struck out the first nine hitters she faced before allowing a double to lead off the fourth for the lone Scots' hit. Wiegand went on to strike out 14 while walking only one.
Seniors
Summer Stitt and
Maggie Graham and sophomore shortstop
Sam Berghoff all delivered runs batted in while Graham and junior third baseman
Julie Josten each had two hits of the team total of six.
The Titans had 15 runs on 15 hits and took advantage of three Monmouth errors to score eight unearned tallies. Josten and Graham each had solo home runs and sophomore leftfielder
Brittany Murphy smacked a three-run homer in the third that staked IWU to a 5-1 lead.
Junior centerfielder
Jillian Runyon had three hits and four RBI with three of those coming on a sixth-inning bases-loaded triple. Josten, who also doubled, had three hits and Berghoff had two hits and two RBI. Sophomore
Kara Bischoff also had a two-hit game.
Senior
Mackenzie Marquis (2-1) was the winning pitcher in game two, allowing two hits and striking out two in four innings of work. Sophomore
Brea Walker struck our five in two innings of relief.
What's Next?
Weather permitting, Illinois Wesleyan will play in the Schutt Invitational on Saturday-Sunday, March 24-25, at the Washington U. Softball Field in St. Louis ... Illinois Wesleyan plays Wartburg at 11 a.m. Saturday before facing WashU at 1:15 p.m. On Sunday, IWU and Wartburg play at 11 a.m. and the Titans and Bears meet again at 3:30 p.m.
