Titans Sweep Big Blue in Conference Opener

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The No. 10-ranked Illinois Wesleyan softball team swept Millikin University on Wednesday, March 28, defeating the Big Blue by a final score of 6-1 in the early game and 4-1 in the night cap. Rain delayed game one for over an hour before teams could retake the field.

With a sweep the Titans improved to 9-3 on the season and 2-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW). Millikin fell to 9-7 and are now 0-2 in conference play.

Sophomore Shelby Fulk provided the pop in game one finishing 3-for-3 at the plate with two home runs and three RBI. Fulk hit a solo shot in the first inning and hit a two-run home run in the second to drive home sophomore Sam Berghoff. Fulk's multi-home run game was the Titans first since Berghoff did it last season against Anderson University on April 8, 2017.

Berghoff finished game one 1-for-2 at the plate with a double and two RBI. The Chicago, Ill. native drove home junior Jillian Runyon on a sacrifice fly in the first inning and doubled home senior Stephanie Prentice in the second. Runyon swiped two bases for the Titans in game one. "Feature Titan" and senior Maggie Graham was 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly that plated Fulk in the fifth.

Sophomore Brea Walker (3-1) turned in a solid performance in game one of the doubleheader pitching a complete game while allowing just one earned run and seven hits. Walker struck out five Big Blue batters which included back-to-back strike outs with two runners on base in the sixth inning.

In game two, sophomore Ally Wiegand (4-1) was stellar in the circle striking out 13 batters with zero walks. Wiegand allowed five hits and one earned run via home run in the fifth inning.

Runyon was 2-for-4 from the leadoff slot in game two with a run scored and one RBI on a line drive over the Millikin center fielder's head. Also with multi-hit games for IWU were Graham who finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and sophomore Kara Bischoff who was 2-for-4.

Chelsea Eads drove in the lone run for Millikin in game one and pinch hitter Skielyr Trenkle's solo home run provided all the Big Blue offense in game two.

Cathy Lebryk (3-4) was the losing pitcher in game one allowing six earned runs on six hits in 6.0 innings pitched. Gracie Brookens (5-3) was the losing pitcher in game two after she allowed two earned runs (three total), five hits, and four walks in 4.0 innings pitched.
