Women's Lacrosse Falters at Centre, 17-7

DANVILLE, Ky. -- The Illinois Wesleyan women's lacrosse team fell to Centre College on Saturday, March 10 by a final score of 17-7. A slow start doomed the Titans as Centre put up the first six goals of the afternoon.

With a loss Illinois Wesleyan fell to 3-3 on the season while Centre improved to 5-1 overall.

IWU was out-shot 30-25 overall and 27-20 in shots on goal during the contest. Illinois Wesleyan struggled to clear the ball out of their own zone, converting on just 14-of-23 clearance attempts. Centre converted on 21-of-28 clearance attempts against the Titan defense. The Titans saw success on the draw control, winning 16-of-25 attempts. Junior Dani Engelbreit won a game-high 11 draw controls.

Senior Abby Kushina and sophomore Amanda Best tied for the team-high in scoring with two goal apiece. Juniors Grainne Kelly, Sam Bidlack, and Englebreit also scored for the Titans. Senior Mariah Smith, Kelly, and Kushina all assisted on goals for IWU. Engelbreit was the team-leader in ground balls with six and caused turnovers with four. Kushina picked up four ground balls and senior Claire Quist added three.

Freshman Janaye Godfrey was the losing goalkeeper allowing four goals in the first seven minutes of play. Quist allowed 13 goals and made 10 saves after coming in to relieve Godfrey.

Colleen Jackson, Hannah Hardy, and Hannah Bellamah each scored four goals for the Colonels. Bellamah was the Colonels leader in ground balls (7) and caused turnovers (6). Natalie Marek was the winning goalkeeper making 13 saves and allowing seven goals.

What's Next?
Illinois Wesleyan continues their spring break tour with a 6 p.m. match against Sewanee: The University of the South on Monday, March 12. Sewanee currently holds a record of 6-1, but will take on Transylvania University on Sunday, March 11 prior to facing off against the Titans.
