Illinois Wesleyan Women's Soccer Uses Shootout to Advance to NCAA Tournament

WHEATON, Ill. – With the game ending in a 1-1 double-overtime tie, the Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer team prevailed in the shootout 5-4 over Wheaton College to earn the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament championship and the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III tournament.
 
The Titans have a record of 13-4-2 while the No. 12-ranked Thunder is 16-3-1.

Illinois Wesleyan will be making its sixth consecutive and 11th overall appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament. The field will be announced at 12:30 p.m. Central time on Monday, Nov. 5 on NCAA.com.
 
The Titans got shootout goals from Jordan Ellerbrock, Shannon Gatehouse, Anna Eager, Jordan Bruscianelli and the deciding tally from Rosie Pettenuzzo.
The lone missed attempt by Wheaton in the shootout round hit the right post and bounded away.
 
The Titans and Thunder battled through a scoreless first half and Wheaton finally scored in the 74th minute (73:26) on a penalty shot by Chelsea Gnan. Illinois Wesleyan got its only goal on its only shot on goal in the first 110 minutes with a Pettenuzzo tally from outside the box at 79:11 to tie the game 1-1. Pettenuzzo's ninth goal of the year ties her for team high with Flower Edington.
 
Illinois Wesleyan were outshot 30-4, and Wheaton had 11 shots on goal, 10 of which were saved by Titan sophomore keeper Kelli McCarthy
