MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- The No. 12-ranked Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team put the clamps on No. 15 Wartburg in the second quarter, outscoring the Knights 19-6 in the period and securing the lead for good en route to a 68-52 win on Friday, Nov. 16, in the Cornell Classic at the Small Multi-Sport Center in Mount Vernon, Iowa.
Illinois Wesleyan (1-1) trailed early by a 12-2 score before closing to within three at 16-13 at the end of the first quarter. But IWU went on a 15-4 run to grab a 28-20 lead on a
Riley Brovelli basket with 3:08 before halftime and went to intermission with a 32-22 lead. Wartburg never got closer than seven points the remainder of the game.
Four players scored in double figures for the Titans, led by junior
Sydney Shanks with 17. Sophomore
Kendall Sosa came off the bench to score 13 points and hand out a team-best five assists while senior
Maddie Merritt added 12 and sophomore
Raven Hughes had 11.
Brovelli had a team-high seven rebounds as IWU was outrebounded 38-31 in the contest. The Titans had 13 steals and scored 32 points off of 28 Wartburg turnovers while committing 18 turnovers.
For the game, IWU shot .438 from the field (28 of 64) and made eight of 12 free throws (.667). The Knights shot .396 from the floor and 12 of 20 (.600) from the line. Neither team was sharp in 3-point shooting as IWU made four of 25 (.160) and Wartburg was two of 14 (.143).
Amanda Brainerd scored 14 and Payton Draper had 10 for Wartburg (1-1).
What's Next?
Illinois Wesleyan plays tournament host Cornell at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17. The Rams (0-2) shot only .241 from the field (14-of-58) in a 71-45 loss to Carroll University on Friday night.
