Second Half Goals Spark Victory For Men's Soccer

WAUKEHSA, Wis. -- The Illinois Wesleyan men's soccer team defeat Carroll University by a final score of 2-0 on Saturday, Sept. 30. IWU scored two goals in the second half to come back and defeat the Pioneers.

With a win the Titans improved to 6-3-1 with a 1-0 record in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW). Carroll fell to 2-8-1 on the season with an 0-2 record in the CCIW.

Carroll's Shea Connell opened the scoring with a goal in the 10th minute of the game. The Pioneers managed just two shots on goal throughout the duration of Saturday's game, with Connell's being the lone shot to find the back of the net. Illinois Wesleyan took six total shots with two on goal in the first, but were unable to connect.

It didn't take long for IWU to get going in the second half however, with sophomore Doug Ballard scoring in the 50th minute off an assist from sophomore Justin Yaeger. Ballard finished the game with three shots, two of which fell on goal. Freshman Ryan Gibbs gave the Titans a lead in the 70th minute with his first goal of the season. Yeager and junior Joey Delbert also recorded shots on goal for IWU.

Freshman goalkeeper Joe Johnson earned the victory in goal making one save. Johnson improved to 5-1 as the Titans goalkeeper on Saturday. Carroll's Nick Drew made four saves and allowed two goals to the Titans.

Illinois Wesleyan finished the contest with a 12-5 shot advantage and a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Titans took seven corner kicks during the contest compared to just three for the Pioneers.

What's Next?

Illinois Wesleyan continues play in the CCIW with a match against North Park University on Wednesday, Oct. 4. North Park currently holds a conference-best record of 7-1 which includes a 2-0 record in conference play. The Vikings will face Wheaton College on Saturday, Sept. 30 prior to meeting the Titans.
