Women's Soccer Blanked By No. 1-Ranked WashU

WHITEWATER, Wis. -- The Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer team fell at the hands of No. 1-ranked Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday, September 16 by a final score of 2-0. Sophomore Flower Edington registered three shots on goal for the Titans in the loss.

With a loss the Titans fall to 4-2-0 on the season with both losses coming to teams ranked in the top five of the United Soccer Coaches poll. The Bears remain undefeated at 5-0-0 following the win.

After Edington earned the first shot on goal of the game in the fifth minute the Bears rattled off six consecutive shots with none falling on goal. WashU took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute off the foot of Jesse Rubin for her second goal of the year.

The Bears controlled the remainder of the first half recording two more shots on goal to zero for Illinois Wesleyan. In total the Titans were out-shot 13-2 in the first half of action.

IWU started to heat up in the 67th minute as Edington and freshman Anna Eager each placed shots on goal. Unfortunately for the Titans, Emma Greenfield was able to stymie both attempts.

Illinois Wesleyan had another chance on goal in the 77th minute, but sophomore Ellie Crabtree's shot on goal was once again saved by Greenfield.

A late yellow card against freshman goalkeeper Kelli McCarthy resulted in a penalty kick for the Bears. Kelly Von Zup added the insurance goal for WashU to give the Bears a 2-0 lead over Illinois Wesleyan.

McCarthy finished the game with four saves for the Titans while Greenfield made five saves in goal for WashU. The Titans were out-shot 22-9 in total, but the Bears held just a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.
