Hindel's Sixth Nets Titans 1-0 Victory Over Franklin

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer team got back into the win colum on Sunday, September 10, defeating Franklin College by a final score of 1-0 from Neis Field. Freshman Cameron Hindel scored the lone goal of the game for IWU, her sixth of the season. Hindel leads the team with 13 points in five games.

With a win the Titans improved to 4-1-0 on the season. Franklin fell to 1-3-0 with a loss.

Franklin had their best chance of the afternoon early on in the first half as Jalynn Gorman found herself one-on-one with freshman goalkeeper Kelli McCarthy. Fortunately for Illinois Wesleyan, Gorman's shot flew high of the crossbar and out of play.

IWU controlled the pace of play for a majority of the first half, racking up five corner kicks and seven shots in the first 16 minutes of action. Freshman Anna Eager came close to scoring in the 14th minute after a shot from Hindel hit off the right post. Hindel found the back of the net in the 24th minute after Franklin's goalkeeper was unable to corral a loose ball inside the box. The freshman was assisted on her goal by Eager, who tallied her second assist of the season.

Franklin had a solid chance on goal late in the game, but the ball was headed away by senior Cassie Leishman who was standing on the goal-line.

Eager led the Titans with three shots on goal during Sunday's contest. In total, the Titans finished with nine shots on goal and 18 total shots. Franklin recorded five shots on goal and 12 total shots.

McCarthy earned her second shutout of the season on Sunday, making five saves in the process to improve her personal record to 4-1-0. Franklin's Lexi Short made eight saves in goal, but fell to 1-3-0 on the year.

Sophomore's Jordan Ellerbrock and Kaitlyn Chen, and freshman Megan O'Neal and Maureen McGrath also recorded shots on goal for the Titans. The Grizzlies were led offensively by Maddie Fleet who finished with four shots and two shots on goal.

What's Next?

The Titans will have nearly a week off of game action prior to heading north to play in the "W" Challenge Tournament hosted by No. 10-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Illinois Wesleyan will face No. 1-ranked Washington University in St. Louis in the first round of the tournament on Saturday, September 16th and will play either Wittenberg University or UW-Whitewater the next day. WashU. is the reigning NCAA Division III national champion and is off to a 4-0-0 start in 2017 with a decisive 3-1 victory over No. 10-ranked Pomona Pitzer.
