BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The No. 23-ranked Illinois Wesleyan softball team swept the competition on day one of the IWU Softball Tournament on Saturday, April 8. IWU defeated DePauw University in game one by a score of 5-1 prior to besting Anderson University by a final score of 10-1 in game two.
With a pair of victories the Titans improved their overall record to 16-6. DePauw fell to 6-14 on the season while Anderson dropped to 8-10.
Freshman
Sam Berghoff starred offensively in both games, hitting a combined 4-of-7 with four RBI, three runs, two home runs, one double, one walk, and one stolen base.
Senior
Katie Caulfield and junior
Maggie Graham each tallied multi-hit games in game one. Graham drove home freshman
Shelby Fulk with an RBI single in the second inning.
Junior starting pitcher
Mackenzie Marquis was impressive in the early game, tossing seven innings while allowing just five hits and one unearned run. Marquis struck out two batters as she improved her season record to 6-3.
IWU provided a constant barrage on offense in game two, scoring in all but one inning. The Titans got things started in the first thanks to a pair of stolen bases from sophomore
Jillian Runyon who scored on a sac fly from freshman
Sydney Alery.
Alery drove home five total runs in game two, three of which came on a triple in the seventh inning. In total, Alery finished game two hitting 2-of-3 with five RBI, one run, and one walk.
Berghoff accounted for all three of the Titan runs in innings three and five with a pair of home runs. Fulk hit 2-of-3 in game two with a double and a walk.
Freshman
Brea Walker pitched a two-hitter in game two with both hits coming by way of Anderson's DJ Martz. Martz hit a home run in the fifth prior to doubling in the seventh. Walker finished the game allowing one run and striking out six.
