WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Illinois Wesleyan women's lacrosse team defeated Carroll University by a final score of 18-2 on Saturday, April 29 and in doing so secured the No. 2 seed in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) conference tournament. IWU is set to host No. 3 seed Carthage College in the first round of the tournament which will take place on Wednesday, May 3.
With a win the Titans finish the regular season 12-5 overall with a 5-1 record in CCIW play while Carroll fell to 2-15 overall with an 0-6 record in the CCIW.
Seven different Titans found the back of the net on Saturday, but it was sophomore
Sara Dust who led the team in scoring with four goals on four shots. Dust has scored four goals for IWU in each of their last three games. However, it was junior
Abby Kushina who led the team in points with seven. Kushina tallied three goals and led the team with a career-high four assists.
Sophomore
Dani Engelbreit matched her career-highs in points (6), goals (3), and assists (3) on Saturday while tying for the team-high in caused turnovers with three. Sophomore
Claudia Richman also caused three turnovers for the Titans who forced a total of 27 on the afternoon. Richman factored into the offense more than usual on Saturday scoring two goals, her first since April 8 against Augustana. Sophomore
Sam Bidlack finished the day with three goals and two assists giving her five consecutive games with at least one goal and one assist.
Also contributing on offense were senior
Maggie Krause who notched three assists, freshman
Amanda Best with two goals, and junior
Mariah Smith with an assist. Smith led the team with five ground balls and five draw controls. Freshman
Daisy Guerrero recorded her first career assist and junior
Heather Grimmer converted for her first career goal.
Junior
Claire Quist faced just three shots all afternoon and made one save. Carroll was simply unable to make it into their offensive half as the Titans held them to a 2-of-18 performance on clearances with five draw controls won all day.
Ariannah Ritter and Donna January each scored for the Pioneers. Ritter was also the team leader in ground balls with three.
What's Next?
No. 2-seed IWU is set to host No. 3-seed Carthage College in the first round of the CCIW conference tournament on Wednesday, May 3 at 7 p.m. Carthage arrives in Bloomington, Ill. with a record of 11-5. Illinois Wesleyan defeated the Lady Reds earlier this season by a final score of 14-5.
