BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan women's lacrosse team honored their lone senior,
Maggie Krause, on Saturday, April 15 by defeating University of Dubuque by a final score of 17-2. Krause tallied four points on Saturday with three goals and one assist.
With a win the Titans improved to 8-5 overall and drew even at 1-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Dubuque fell to 8-6 and 1-2 in the CCIW with the loss.
IWU controlled the pace of the game from the onset, opening the game with four unanswered goals. Sophomore
Sara Dust scored two of the Titans first goals and finished the day with three. The Spartans first got on the board with 19:04 to play in the first half, but Illinois Wesleyan racked up 11 unanswered goals to extend their lead to 15-1 in the second half.
IWU held the Spartans to just eight total shots and five shots on goal Saturday. On the other hand, the Titans amassed 38 shots with 22 falling on goal. Illinois Wesleyan also won the turnover battle by forcing the Spartans to commit 27 turnovers to their 15. IWU also held a 13-to-8 advantage on draw controls.
Sophomore
Grainne Kelly led the team with six goals and seven total points on Saturday. Junior
Abby Kushina and sophomores
Sam Bidlack and
Breanna Metry also scored for the Titans. Bidlack and Kushina tied for the team lead with two assists apiece. Sophomore
Dani Engelbreit led the team with four ground balls. In goal, junior
Claire Quist needed to make just three saves to earn the win.
The Spartans were led on offense by Claire Carlson who tallied each of their goals. Goalkeeper Kyra Nelson led the team with five ground balls and five saves.
What's Next?
IWU plays twice next week with both games coming on the road. The Titans start the week on Wednesday, April 19 with a 7 p.m. contest against Carthage College. Carthage currently owns a record of 9-3 and are set to face Augustana College on Saturday, April 15.
