BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team blasted Elmhurst 14-5 in the first game of a doubleheader before losing to the Bluejays, 7-2, in the nightcap of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin pair at Horenberger Field on Saturday, April 15.
The Titans are now 15-11 overall and 8-4 in conference play while the Bluejays are 14-11 overall and also 8-4 in the league.
IWU had four extra base hits among its 16 hits in the opener and put up crooked numbers in four innings. Freshman centerfielder
Nick Figus had four hits and drove home three runs while freshman first baseman
Garrett Shea had three hits and two RBI.
Senior catcher
Pat Mollo had two hits with a home run and also collecting two hits were junior second baseman
Gino Cavalieri, senior designated hitter
Jarrod Juskiewicz and sophomore shortstop
Jonathan Broadbear.
Matt Banaitis improved to 4-0 as he pitched eight strong innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits and striking out five.
Elmhurst's Nathan Tovell tossed a six-hit complete game in the nightcap. Figus had two more hits to cap off a 6-for-8 day. Mollo had the team's only extra base hit with a sixth-inning double.
Senior
Nick Huskisson (0-2) took the loss and struck out four in 2 2/3 innings as five total IWU hurlers fanned nine Elmhurst hitters. The doubleheader featured 12 total batters hit by pitches with nine coming in game one and three more in the second game.
