Titan Baseball Loses Slugfest in Florida Finale

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team lost 17-8 to Trinity (Conn.) College in its final game in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Auburndale, Fla., on Saturday, March 18.

The Titans leave the Sunshine State with a 7-4 record while the Bantams head north with a 4-4 mark.

Freshman centerfielder Nick Figus and freshman first baseman Garrett Shea each had four of the Titans' 14 hits. Junior shortstop Gino Cavalieri had a pair of hits and two runs batted in and senior catcher Pat Mollo had two hits with a long home run and two RBI. Sophomore Jacob Houghton also delivered a two-run single in the fifth inning that staked IWU to a 7-4 lead at the time.

Trinity banged out 23 hits and took advantage of six Titan errors to score their 17 runs, including seven in the sixth and three in both the seventh and ninth. Due to the errors, only nine of the Bantams' 17 runs were earned runs against Titan pitchers. Senior Louis Acklin (1-2), the fourth of eight IWU hurlers, absorbed the loss.
