Titans Improve to 3-0 with 94-82 Win Over Calvin

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Senior Jaylen Beasley scored 13 points, snared a career-high 13 rebounds and had four assists while four other players scored in double figures as the Illinois Wesleyan men's basketball team improved to 3-0 with a 94-82 win over Calvin College at the Shirk Center on Saturday, Nov. 18.

Junior Nick Coleman and senior Brady Rose led IWU with 18 points each while sophomore Zach Knobloch scored 14 and junior Jason Gregoire added 10. The 18 points and five 3-pointers were career highs for Coleman and the 10 points was also a career game-high for Gregoire, who had 18 career points in 11 previous varsity games.

After making a school-record 20 Friday night against Alma, IWU's weekend barrage of 3-pointers continued Saturday with the Titans hitting 15 of 31 3-point tries (48.4 percent) while making 11 of 27 (40.7 percent) of their 2-point efforts. IWU held a huge lead in free throws, making 27 of 34 (79.4 percent) compared to 13 of 16 (81.3 percent) for the Knights.

The game saw 13 lead changes early and four ties, the last one coming at 22-22 with 7:40 to play before the half. IWU went on a 9-0 run to get a 31-22 lead with 6:07 left in the half, then went on another 7-0 run to lead by a 38-24 score (4:14) before going into the locker room ahead 45-35.

The Knights exploded out of halftime with the first nine points to cut the Titan lead to 45-44. A three-point play from Rose and two baskets by senior center Tyler Burdine staked IWU to seven straight points and a 52-44 lead and over a six-minute stretch, IWU had a 24-6 scoring edge to get a commanding 69-50 lead with 11:32 remaining. Calvin could get no closer than 10 points late (90-80, 46 seconds to go).

Calvin, who had 42 points in the paint compared to 28 for IWU, was led by the 15 points of Austin Bykerk and six rebounds from Alex Bos.

IWU junior Colin Bonnett left the game at the 16:30 mark of the second half after turning an ankle and did not return.

What's Next?
Illinois Wesleyan plays Millsaps College on Saturday, Nov. 25, in the Rhodes College Classic in Memphis, Tenn. The Titans will play the host school on Sunday at 3 p.m. ... IWU opens College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play on Saturday, Dec. 2 with a home game against Carthage College.
