Women's Soccer Advances With 2-1 Win Over Centre College

ADA, Ohio -- The Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer team defeated Centre College by a final score of 2-1 on Saturday, Nov. 11 to advance to the second round of the NCAA Division III women's soccer championships. IWU will face-off with regional host and No. 14-ranked Ohio Northern in the second round after the Polar Bears defeated Penn St.-Behrend by a 2-0 tally on Saturday.

With a win the Titans improved to 17-4 on the year while Centre concludes their season with a 15-4-2 record. Illinois Wesleyan improved their overall NCAA Tournament record to 10-7-3, their first tournament victory since the 2015 season when they defeated Pomona-Pitzer 1-0 in double overtime.

Sophomore Ellie Crabtree scored the game-winner in the 81st minute following a corner kick from sophomore Shannon Gatehouse and a feed from junior Rosie Pettenuzzo.

It was freshman Cameron Hindel who opened the scoring for Illinois Wesleyan, scoring an unassisted breakaway goal in the 15th minute of action.

Illinois Wesleyan controlled play throughout the first half up until the final 10 seconds, in which Centre broke through the Titan defense and scored the one-touch equalizer.

IWU out-shot the Colonels 19-11 throughout the match which included an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. Hindel led the Titans with six total shots while Pettenuzzo took five of her own, including a penalty kick which was saved late in the second half. Sophomores Flower Edington and Jordan Ellerbrock also recorded shots on goal during the match.

Freshman goalkeeper Kelli McCarthy allowed one goal and made three saves on 11 shots faced for the Titans. Centre's Sarah Youkilis allowed both of IWU's goals while making nine saves.

Illinois Wesleyan will play No. 14-ranked Ohio Northern at 1:30 ET on Sunday, Nov. 12. Ohio Northern was victorious over Penn St.-Behrend by a 2-0 tally in the first round of action on Saturday.
