Edington's Brace Gives Titans Victory In Overtime

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer team defeated Elmhurst College on Saturday, Oct. 7 by a final score of 2-1 in the first overtime period. Sophomore Flower Edington recorded a brace, scoring each of the Titans two goals on the afternoon including the game-winning goal in overtime.

With a win the No. 21-ranked Titans improved to 10-2-0 with a spotless 3-0-0 record in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW). Elmhurst fell to 7-3-0 and 2-2 in the CCIW.

Freshman goalkeeper Kelli McCarthy made six saves and allowed one goal en route to her 10th victory in goal. Elmhurst's Sophia Tuliglowski made five saves and allowed both goals to IWU.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Senior Rachel Westerkamp nearly found the back of the net on an early free-kick but it was saved by Elmhurst.
  • Elmhurst's Megan Mrazek opened the scoring with a goal in the 25th minute.
  • IWU started to break through the Elmhurst defense to start the second half. Both junior Rosie Pettenuzzo and sophomore Jordan Ellerbrock recorded shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of the half.
  • With rain pouring onto Neis Field, Edington beat two defenders in front of the goal for her first goal of the afternoon.
  • Edington nearly scored in the 80th minute. Her chance from in front of goal sailed high.
  • After a stalemate to conclude regulation a Bluejay foul set-up another free-kick opportunity for Westerkamp. Westerkamp's free-kick found Edington who placed the ball on frame and in to give the Titans their 10th win of the season.

NOTABLES
  • Freshman Cameron Hindel also recorded two shots on goal during the contest.
  • After a combined four shots in the first half, the teams tallied 14 total shots in the second.
  • IWU recorded the only three shots of the overtime period.
  • The Titans held a 7-3 corner kick advantage.

What's Next?

Illinois Wesleyan will travel to Jacksonville, Ill. for a non-conference match against Illinois College on Tuesday, Oct. 10. Illinois College currently holds a record of 3-9.
