ELMHURST, Ill. – A 34-point second half helped the No. 11-ranked Illinois Wesleyan football team overcome a small halftime deficit to beat Elmhurst 47-15 at Langhorst Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 28.
The Titans improved to 8-1 and 6-1 while Elmhurst fell to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in the league. Illinois Wesleyan amassed 446 yards of total offense (217 rushing, 229 passing) while limiting the Bluejays to 268 yards (80 rushing, 188 passing).
Sophomore quarterback
Brandon Bauer finished 18 of 25 for 229 yards and four touchdowns, three going to
Jack Healy and the other to
Zach Walsh.
Junior
Morgan Alexander had 120 rushing yards on 19 carries with a touchdown and
Matese Scott rushed for 55 yards on five carries. Healy wound up with six catches for 84 yards.
Senior defensive end
Eric Dubose had 3.5 quarterback sacks and a blocked kick while leading the team with eight total tackles. Senior
Justin Krzeczkowski made seven tackles while
Trevor Koepke and senior linebacker
Jordan Hassan each made six total tackles.
The Titans, who trailed at halftime 15-13, scored 2:16 into the game on a 26-yard pass from Bauer to Healy.
Anthony Sciarini added the extra point kick to give IWU a 7-0 lead.
Elmhurst took a 15-7 lead on a 24 yard field goal and two TD passes from Orlando Hernandez, one of 77 yards to Austin Hasahn and the other of 7 yards to Jawan Gaines.
With 4:15 to go before halftime, Bauer connected with Walsh on a 17 yard scoring strike but the two-point conversion failed.
On their first possession of the second half, Bauer found Healy on a 6-yard score in a drive set up by a 40-yard run by Scott. Alexander ran in from 1-yard out with 4:39 to play in the third quarter to stake IWU to a 26-15 lead after Sciarini's kick.
The Titans then tacked on 21 fourth quarter points on rushing TDs by Bauer and senior
Jack Warner and the third TD grab of the day by Healy.
