Women's Soccer Tallies 2-0 Victory Over Carthage On Seniors' Day

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer team defeated Carthage College in convincing fashion on Saturday, Oct. 21, besting the Lady Reds by a final score of 2-0 on seniors' day. IWU celebrated the career's of five senior student-athletes on Saturday, Rachel Schneider, Rachel Westerkamp, Hanna Heline, Alyssa Dorning, and Cassie Leishman. All five were starters for this afternoon's game.

With a victory the Titans improved to 13-3 on the season overall with a 5-1 mark in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW). Carthage fell to 9-7 overall with a 2-4 record in CCIW competition.

Freshman Kelli McCarthy earned her seventh shut-out of the season on Saturday, making five saves in the process. For Carthage, Emily Furmanek made five saves and allowed two goals.

After 30 scoreless minutes of action in the first half, sophomore Ellie Crabtree got the Titans in the scoring colum with a free kick from nearly 40 yards out.

IWU held a 7-6 shot advantage in the first half with three shots on goal. Despite trailing on overall shots in the first half, Carthage placed four shots on goal. The Titans amassed a 5-0 advantage on corner kicks in the half.

Sophomore Jordan Ellerbrock increased the Titan lead to 2-0 with a strike inside the box in the 48th minute off a cross from freshman Cameron Hindel.

The Titans out shot Carthage 9-4 in the second half of action and 16-10 overall, despite matching Carthage 7-7 for shots on goal. Sophomore Flower Edington and freshman Megan O'Neal also recorded shots on goal during the contest.

What's Next?

In their final home match of the regular season, the Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer team will face-off against Augustana College on Tuesday, Oct. 24. Augustana currently holds a record of 8-6-1 with a 3-2-1 mark in the CCIW after defeating Millikin 1-0 on Saturday.
