Doug Ballard scored the lone Titan goal of the match, a bending strike in the 46th minute.
With a loss the Titans two match winning-streak was snapped as the team fell to 8-5-1 with a 3-2 record in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW). Carthage improved to 9-6-2 with a 3-2-1 mark in CCIW competition.
Carthage got on the board quickly in the first half, scoring in the 15th and 23rd minutes off a pair of headers from the back post. Johnny Rimkus and Kevin Mahoney collected their third and fourth goals of the season respectively.
After a quiet half that saw just two shots from Illinois Wesleyan, Ballard got the ball rolling for IWU in the second half. Following a throw in from Nie, and a pass from sophomore
Patrick Hickey, Ballard scored from the top of the penalty box on a ball placed perfectly into the upper 90 for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Unfortunately for the Titans, none of the next five shots on goal in the second were able to find the back of the net. Overall the Titans were out shot 15-9, but drew even with the Red Men in the second half, 7-7. IWU also held a 6-2 shots on goal advantage in the second half while Carthage had five shots on goal all match.
Freshman goalkeeper Joey Johnson made three saves and allowed two goals. For the Red Men, Brayan Arce Justiniano made five saves and allowed one goal.
What's Next?
Illinois Wesleyan will face Wheaton College on Monday, Oct. 23 in a make-up game following the postponement of their Oct. 14 match. Wheaton is currently 7-7 overall with a 3-2 tally in CCIW play.
