Titan Men's Soccer Gets 4-1 Conference Win at Wheaton

WHEATON, Ill. – Sophomore Doug Ballard had a goal and an assist as the Illinois Wesleyan men's soccer team won a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin match by a 4-1 score over Wheaton College at Joe Bean Stadium in Wheaton on Monday, Oct. 23.

Illinois Wesleyan, who beat the Thunder for only the fourth time in 32 meetings in the series, improved to 9-5-1 overall and 4-2-0 in the CCIW while Wheaton had its four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 8-8-0 overall and 4-3-0 in the league.

The win also ended a nine-game Wheaton win streak against the Titans as IWU's last win over the Thunder was in 2007. Monday night's game was originally scheduled for Oct. 14 but was postponed due to weather.

Ballard scored his eighth goal of the year with an assist from senior Ryan Kaplan with 10:20 gone in the first half and the Titans took a 2-0 lead at 19:47 when senior defender Tom Nie scored his first goal of the season with an assist going to senior Collen Frost.

Wheaton got a penalty kick goal from Drew Shay with 22 seconds left in the first half to cur their deficit to 2-1.

In the 75th minute (74:09), Illinois Wesleyan added their third goal when junior midfielder Mason Maier scored his sixth goal of the year from the top of the box with assists to Ballard and sophomore Patrick Hickey.

Hickey added a goal from the right side of the box at 86:13 to put the game out of reach on an assist from junior Blake Tempel.

Freshman Joe Johnson made four saves as Wheaton and IWU each had five shots on goal. The Thunder held a 10-9 edge in total shots taken and a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
