Titans Hold Off Monterrey Tech in Home Exhibition Football Opener

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Illinois Wesleyan got two defensive touchdowns and senior Maurice Shoemaker-Gilmore ran for three touchdowns to help the Titan football team post a 33-16 win over Monterrey Tech-Mexico in an exhibition game at Tucci Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 3.

Shoemaker-Gilmore rushed for 115 yards on 11 carries to lead IWU, who outgained the Wild Sheep by a 157-96 margin on the ground. TEC-CEM had a 317-303 edge in total offense as they threw for 221 yards compared to 146 for the Titans.

Jack Donegan completed 15 of 23 passes for 135 yards and rushed for 27 more. Quincy Butler led IWU with four catches for 51 yards and Dom Comfort had three grabs for 47 yards.

The Titans were led defensively by senior Sean Garvey with 18 total tackles, including nine solo, with an interception for 12 return yards. IWU scored two defensive touchdowns - one on a 31 yard interception return by Brinton Wilkey in the first quarter and another just more than a minute later on a 27 yard fumble recovery return by Erich Lieser.

Genaro Moreno threw for 124 yards (12 of 21) and Raul Reyes accounted for 97 passing yards (9 of 14) for the Wild Sheep, who are now 0-2 this season. Ivan Morales led the team with 53 rushing yards.

What's Next?
Illinois Wesleyan travels to Lincoln, Nebraska, to open its 2016 regular season next Saturday for a 1 p.m. game at Nebraska Wesleyan ... The game against Monterrey Tech is not recognized by the NCAA as a "countable opponent" and is viewed as an exhibition only with no records or statistics appearing.
