ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Illinois Weselyan men's soccer team was defeated by Washington University in St. Louis on Friday night by a final score of 3-0. WashU. was paced by a 19-to-4 shot advantage over the Titans which included seven shots on goal.
With a loss the Titans fall to 3-4-1 on the season while the No. 12-ranked Bears improve to 5-0-0 and continue their undefeated run.
Illinois Wesleyan was unable to find their stride on the offensive end of the ball during Friday's match-up, mustering one shot on goal against WashU. Freshman
Patrick Hickey registered the teams best chance of the first half, heading a ball on target, but having it saved by a Bear defender in the box at the 26:25 mark. Hickey followed up with a header which fell just wide of the goal to end the first.
Tied 0-0 nearing the end of the first half, the Bears struck paydirt by drawing a penalty in the box off a corner kick. WashU.'s Ike Witte took full advantage of the opportunity and placed the game-winning goal past sophomore goalkeeper
Eddie Sanchez in the 42nd minute.
Sanchez saw his first action in goal since the Sept. 10 match against University of Dubuque, allowing three goals and making four saves.
What's Next?
The Titans will stay in St. Louis through the weekend in anticipation of a bout aginst Webster University on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7:00 p.m. Webster enters Tuesday's action with a record of 2-5-0.
