Women's Soccer Breaks Winless Streak to Defeat Rose-Hulman

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer team got off the schneid on Wednesday, Sept. 21, defeating Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to earn their first victory since the season opener on Sept. 1. IWU's 1-0 victory broke the teams five match scoreless streak dating back to the opener against Benedictine.

With the win the Titans improved to 2-3-2 on the season while Rose-Hulman fell to 5-3-0.

Offensively the Titans shot the ball well on Wednesday night, putting nine of 12 total shots on target. Heading into this match IWU had struggled to put shots on goal, recording two or less in four of their last five contests. Freshman Jordan Ellerbrock tallied the first goal of her Titan career in the second half of action. Ellerbrock used her head to find the back of the net off a cross from senior Alison Seger in the 67th minute. Seger now has 10 career assists with tonight's being the first of her 2016 season.

On defense the reigning CCIW Defensive Player of the Week, sophomore Katie Denney, notched her third consecutive shut-out while making four saves. Denney has recorded 18 shut-outs in 30 career matches. The Titan defense suffocated the Rose-Hulman attack, surrendering a meager seven total shot attempts with two coming in the second half.

What's Next?
The Titans aim to keep Denney's shut-out streak alive on Saturday, Sept. 24 against Transylvania University. The Pioneers enter Saturday's contest with an overall record of 0-5-2 having lost three straight.
