WHEATON, Ill. –Junior shortstop
Jarrod Juskiewicz got five hits with six RBI in game two to help the Illinois Wesleyan baseball team earn a split of a doubleheader against Wheaton College at Pfund Stadium in Carol Stream, Ill.
Wheaton won game one by a 4-2 score and Illinois Wesleyan rebounded with a 17-10 win in the nightcap, banging out 19 hits with three home runs and all 17 runs were accounted for by runs batted in.
The Titans are 21-17 overall and 12-8 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, securing a spot in next week's postseason tournament, while the Thunder is 23-16 overall and 10-10 in the league.
In game one, IWU outhit the Thunder 13-10 but left 11 men on base. Sophomore second baseman
Gino Cavalieri had three hits while Juskiewicz and sophomore first baseman
Tim Smyk each had two.
Junior starter
Sean Coonan (3-4) took the loss, going 7 1/3 innings with four runs on nine hits. He fanned four and walked one.
In game two, after falling behind 7-2, the Titans turned on the offense, scoring five in the second inning, tacking on five more in the fourth and four runs in the fifth inning.
Juskiewicz, who also scored four runs, had two doubles and a homer among his five hits and Cavalieri had three hits with a homer and four runs scored. Senior third baseman
Matthew Mardis had two doubles and three RBI and Smyk had two hits with a two-run HR and four runs batted in. Junior catcher
Pat Mollo also had two hits with a double and drove home three runs.
Sophomore lefty
Mitch Goll (3-2) got the pitching win, working four innings in relief of starter
Nick Huskisson. Goll allowed four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Sophomore
Matt Banaitis pitched four solid innings of scoreless relief to get a save, allowing one hit and striking out four.
What's Next?
The same two teams will square off at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at Horenberger Field in an effort to beat predicted mid-afternoon rain in Bloomington-Normal.
