BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- On his senior day, third baseman
Matthew Mardis drove home two runs including the game-winner in the seventh as the Illinois Wesleyan baseball team downed Wheaton, 3-2, at Horenberger Field on Saturday, May 7.
In a game that featured a 56-minute rain delay, the win gives IWU a 22-17 record overall and a 13-8 final mark in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while the Thunder season ends at 23-17 and their 10-11 mark will keep them from being part of the CCIW postseason tourney.
Freshman rightfielder
Mitch Pfeiffer was IWU's leadoff hitter Saturday and responded by going 4-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, and two runs scored. Senior centerfielder
Adam Glogovsky, sophomore first baseman
Ryne Elvers and freshman catcher
Seth Palmby joined Mardis with two hits each in a 12 hit IWU attack.
Sophomore
Ian McGinnis (2-1), the fourth of six IWU pitchers, got the win and junior
Brian Henry picked up his fifth save of the season by working a scoreless ninth. Freshman
Nick Brune started the game and worked three innings of two-hit shutout ball with three strikeouts.
IWU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third on a sacrifice fly by Mardis to score Pfeiffer and an Elvers single to bring home Glogovsky. After the Thunder plated two to tie the game in the top of the seventh, IWU scored what would be the winning run when Pfeiffer led off with a double, went to third on a Glogovsky single and run home on Mardis's single through the left side.
